A generational player is coming to Liverpool and Fabrizio Romano has confirmed it.

Let's be honest, this transfer window hasn't exactly gone the way Liverpool fans were hoping.

It's still early and things can change quickly, but compared to this time last year, it's been pretty underwhelming. Last summer it felt like Liverpool were getting deals done left, right and centre. Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez were already through the door, while Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak looked like they were only a matter of time.

It was an exciting period to be a Red, and naturally everyone expected more of the same this summer.

Instead, Liverpool's pursuit of Yan Diomande looks to have hit a major stumbling block. The latest reports suggest the young Ivorian is leaning towards Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Liverpool back at square one.

Maybe it's time to accept that this is just where the club is right now. Liverpool are still planning for the future, and Diomande fit that approach perfectly. He wasn't the finished article, but he had all the attributes to develop into something special.

The problem is there just aren't many players like him on the market.

Finding a right-winger who can eventually take over from Mohamed Salah is one of the toughest jobs in football.

Players with that mix of pace, goals, creativity and potential are incredibly hard to find, which is why Liverpool were so interested in Diomande in the first place.

If he does end up choosing PSG, Liverpool will have to go back to the drawing board. The recruitment team have earned plenty of trust over the years, but there's no denying they've got a difficult task ahead.

Replacing Salah was never going to be easy, and missing out on one of the most exciting young options available would only make that challenge even bigger.

But of course it's not just the attack that needs reinforcements. Liverpool's defence is in a bit of a bad shape as well with two experienced players in Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson both leaving.

It leaves Andoni Iraola with quite a bit of lack of depth in defence and a lot of inexperience. Jeremy Jacquet is likely going to have to play a lot of minutes meanwhile Giovanni Leoni is also going to be relied on.

Liverpool have also brought in Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye will likely get more minutes as well.

In all fairness the quartet represent a exciting future at Anfield. Jacquet and Leoni have been two of the best young defenders in Europe's top five leagues over the last two seasons.

Ndukwe and Ndiaye were two of the best young centre-backs at the U17 World Cup.

Liverpool also have the talented Prince Kobe Cisse and Shadrach Ekiugbo, who represent Wales and England at youth level respectively.

It would be utter gluttony to add more centre-backs to this exciting list, but that is what Liverpool have done.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed earlier this week that Liverpool are going to be signing Dara Jikiemi from Celtic.

A Scotland youth international, Jikiemi is a generational prospect. He has captained the Scottish national team at U15 and U16 level and has also taken penalties for his country.

What makes Jikiemi such an exciting player is because of his composure on the ball. He is a very comfortable ball-playing centre-back, who can also read the game really well.

The 16-year-old won 80% of his defensive duels for Scotland's youth national teams and 63% of his aerial duels.

Those are some really impressive numbers and he has all the potential in the world. The last former Celtic centre-back that Liverpool signed ended-up pretty well for the Reds as well.
