Fabrizio Romano has moved to share his intel on a crazy rumoured Liverpool transfer.
One incredible report popped up this week: Darwin Nunez is rejoining Liverpool. The Uruguayan will be allowed to leave Al-Hilal on a free transfer just one year after moving there from Anfield.
Reports in Uruguay claim he will rejoin Liverpool as a result. It’s one that, for us, makes complete sense given the state of the squad right now.
Not to mention the incredible profit it offers.
But it seems that those reports are at odds with what Fabrizio Romano is hearing. He’s poured cold water on the reports, suggesting there’s not actually anything to them.
“Guys, with maximum respect to those sources close to the Uruguayan national team, close to the club or whatever, my information is that those close to Darwin and sources close to Darwin’s camp deny this information,” he told his YouTube channel.
“Those close to Darwin Nunez say that it’s not true – there’s nothing ongoing with Darwin Nunez and Liverpool. This is the information coming from those close to the Uruguayan striker.”
There are mixed signals with this one, to say the least. Nunez will move somewhere this summer and we do believe it makes sense for that to be Liverpool.
Let’s just see what happens.

Al-Hilal Career and Performance
As of 16 June 2026, Darwin Núñez is a 26-year-old forward who is currently a free agent following a brief, turbulent stint with Al-Hilal. After transferring from Liverpool to the Saudi Pro League heavyweights for £46.3 million in August 2025, the Uruguayan striker struggled for consistent form, registering nine goals in 24 appearances. His situation deteriorated rapidly in February 2026 when he was removed from the club's active league registration squad to make way for French star Karim Benzema. Left disheartened by his lack of competitive minutes and falling down the pecking order in Riyadh, Núñez mutually agreed to terminate his contract at the end of the domestic season.
International Status and World Cup Involvement
Núñez is currently in North America representing the Uruguay national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was named in Marcelo Bielsa's starting lineup for their opening Group H match against Saudi Arabia on 15 June 2026, but he endured a difficult night, looking visibly rusty before being substituted at half-time during the 1–1 draw. His availability on a free transfer has sparked intense speculation linking him with an emotional return to Liverpool as a potential replacement for the injured Hugo Ekitike, alongside reported summer transfer interest from alternative Premier League suitors like Chelsea and Newcastle United.
