Fabrizio Romano has confirmed why Liverpool talks broke down this week.
Ibrahima Konate will not stay with Liverpool and departs the club at the end of his contract in one month's time. That's the big story on Friday and it's one that comes as a shock.
Konate, after all, publicly voiced his belief that talks with Liverpool were progressing well and that he'd likely stay. It felt as though all was positive in that regard - but clearly not.
Liverpool have instead broken off talks with the player, bringing an end to his five years at the club. So how has that happened?
Fabrizio Romano discussed his understanding on his YouTube channel. He says that this one came down to bonuses - both for appearances and trophies, essentially.
Liverpool and Konate agreed on salary and agreed on contract length. They just couldn't agree on bonuses beyond that and it ended any chance of a deal.
It does explain why Konate felt confident, admittedly. He had agreements on the core parts of the contract, after all, and bonuses are usually a bit of a formality.
Instead, it's enough for him to walk away. We can only imagine, assuming Romano is correct, that the difference in bonuses were significant here, potentially costing Konate quite a lot of money.
Anfield Departure Confirmed
As of 29 May 2026, Ibrahima Konaté is officially set to leave Liverpool as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of June. Despite the 27-year-old French defender publicly stating in April that a contract renewal was close, talks between his representatives and sporting director Richard Hughes have completely broken down over wage valuation. Having joined from RB Leipzig for £35 million in 2021, Konaté finishes a five-year Anfield stay that included a Premier League title, making his final appearance in Sunday's 1–1 draw against Brentford, where he played the full 90 minutes.
Future Destinations
The powerhouse centre-back's availability on a free transfer has alerted Europe's elite. Reports indicate Konaté heavily favours a move to La Liga, though a return to his hometown with Paris Saint-Germain remains a strong possibility. He has also been named in Didier Deschamps' France squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
