Tottenham Hotspur’s summer rebuild may yet begin with a familiar face. According to information from Fabrizio Romano, Joao Palhinha has made Spurs his priority as he considers his next move away from Bayern Munich.
For a club emerging from a season of anxiety, instability and narrow escape, that matters. Not every transfer is about novelty. Sometimes, the smartest move is the one that restores a little certainty.
Palhinha spent last season on loan at Tottenham and became far more than a stopgap midfielder. He scored vital goals, including the decisive strike on the final day against Everton, helping Spurs preserve their Premier League status.
The Portugal international, described as “world-class”, now appears open to staying in north London permanently. That is no small thing. In a market where players often chase Champions League football, prestige or immediate silverware, Palhinha’s preference suggests he believes in Roberto De Zerbi’s project.
Romano reports that Palhinha is giving Tottenham priority because of his strong relationship with De Zerbi. For Spurs, that should be treated as a serious advantage.
Tottenham have already agreed deals for Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi, both arriving on free transfers, and that tells us plenty about the mood inside the club. De Zerbi wants experience. He wants authority. He wants players who understand pressure.
Palhinha fits that brief neatly. He is 30, hardened by Premier League football, international football and the demands of Bayern Munich. More importantly, he already knows what Tottenham looked like at their lowest point.
That sort of player can be invaluable in a dressing room trying to move from survival to ambition. He is not a glamour signing in the modern sense, but he gives a team shape, edge and emotional weight.
Sporting CP are ready to act if Tottenham hesitate. Reports have suggested terms were agreed over a potential return to Lisbon, with negotiations continuing with Bayern.
That leaves Spurs with a decision to make. If they trigger their buy option, or agree fresh terms with Bayern, Palhinha can stay. If they delay, Sporting will sense an opening.
This is where Tottenham’s summer becomes a test of clarity. De Zerbi has made his admiration obvious. Palhinha has apparently made his preference clear. Bayern are willing to sell. The pathway exists.
Tottenham need change, but change without continuity can become chaos. Palhinha offers both reliability and renewal. He is known, trusted and suited to a squad that must climb quickly.
If Spurs are serious about giving De Zerbi the tools to rebuild, keeping Palhinha should be close to the top of the list. This is not simply about signing a midfielder. It is about retaining a leader who has already fought for the badge when the stakes were uncomfortable.
Should this deal collapse, supporters will not look at the player or the manager. They will look higher up.
From a Spurs fan’s perspective, this feels like one of those transfer stories that should be straightforward, which probably means it will become unnecessarily tense.
Palhinha wants Tottenham. De Zerbi rates him. Bayern appear willing to move him on. Sporting are interested, but the player’s priority gives Spurs the stronger hand. That should be enough for Tottenham to act with purpose.
After last season, supporters are not asking for fantasy football recruitment. They want competence, leadership and players who do not disappear when the table starts looking ugly. Palhinha showed he had the stomach for that fight. His winner against Everton was not merely a goal, it was a moment that kept the club breathing.
There is also a wider point here. De Zerbi cannot rebuild Spurs with potential alone. Young talent matters, of course, but this squad needs grown ups. Robertson, Senesi and Palhinha would give Tottenham a harder spine, something the team badly lacked.
The worry, naturally, is hesitation. Spurs have wasted good situations before by overthinking them. If Palhinha genuinely wants to stay, the club should not allow Sporting to turn interest into momentum.
For once, Tottenham have been handed an invitation. They need to accept it.
