West Ham have taken a significant step as they hope to snap up Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo during the January transfer window, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.
Mainoo and Zirkzee could potentially leave United in January as they struggle for minutes under Ruben Amorim this season.
Amorim has demonstrated a clear preference for a midfield pivot of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. Even Manuel Ugarte appears to be ahead of Mainoo in the pecking order.
Mainoo has yet to start a Premier League game, with all seven of his appearances coming from the bench. Zirkzee has also seen his playing time dramatically reduce following the summer arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.
Zirkzee has managed a mere 82 top-flight minutes this season.
Both players are attracting significant interest ahead of the upcoming window, but a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United are not prepared to let any of them depart.
Now, Romano has confirmed as much, further stating that West Ham called United to ask about the pair. The Hammers are eyeing a double loan swoop.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano divulged, “I told you that Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee have this desire to play more, but on the other side, Manchester United still insist to keep the players at the club.”
“Ruben Amorim is insisting to keep them because there will be many games in the next months. Man United are not playing in European competitions but they’re in a very good moment, there will be many games around Christmas time and during the end of the year. So Amorim wants as many players as possible.”
“The second part of the season is going to be very important, so Amorim hopes to keep Kobbie Mainoo.”
“There is interest from Napoli after the injury to Kevin de Bruyne. Napoli wantd the player last summer and remain interested in Mainoo.”
“There is also interest from West Ham. West Ham have called to understand the situation of both Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo on loan for six months, of course, to give them the opportunity to play and the chance to go to the World Cup.”
“At the moment Man United are not open to a negotiation. That’s the status of the story. Nothing else is evolving about this.”
United are back in action on Saturday when they take on Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
