Transfer market insider Fabrizio Romano has issued a fresh update on the future of Pep Guardiola, as Manchester City’s hierarchy enters a defining period of uncertainty following their recent European exit.
Speculation surrounding Guardiola has heightened following Tuesday night’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid. With City also trailing Arsenal by nine points in the Premier League and the manager’s current contract entering its final year, many are questioning if the Pep cycle at the Etihad Stadium is naturally drawing to a close.
Since his arrival in the summer of 2016, Pep Guardiola has redefined the club’s history, but the recent 5-1 aggregate loss to the Spanish giants has sparked a rare sense of vulnerability within the fan base.
As the club prepares for Sunday’s hugely significant Carabao Cup final against the Gunners at Wembley, the lack of a formal announcement regarding Guardiola’s position as manager for next season has left a void filled by mounting exit rumours.
Now, speaking on his latest YouTube video, insider Fabrizio Romano has maintained that those within the Etihad Stadium are continuing to await a decision from Pep Guardiola over his future at the club.
“Manchester City – as a club, as management, as ownership – are waiting for Pep Guardiola to decide”, Romano explained this week.
He continued, “At the moment, according to my information, the situation is still open.”
While the situation remains ‘open’, sporting director Hugo Viana will no doubt be conducting a strategic audit of the playing squad, which includes mapping out potential successors should the Catalan decide to walk away this summer.
The immediate focus for the club shifts to Sunday, March 22, where Manchester City have the chance to secure their first silverware of the 2025/26 campaign.
Victory at Wembley could potentially revitalise Pep Guardiola’s hunger for a final year at the helm, whereas a loss to Mikel Arteta’s side might solidify the feeling that a changing of the guard is not only coming but necessary for the club’s evolution.
