Liverpool’s progression in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night should have been a straightforward positive, yet the victory over Southampton was overshadowed by a worrying sight. Giovanni Leoni, the Italian defender who had only just been handed his debut by Arne Slot, left the field on a stretcher after an awkward fall late in the game.
For supporters celebrating a 2-1 win at Anfield, the injury immediately shifted the conversation from performance to prognosis. The 18-year-old had impressed across 80 minutes, only for his evening to end prematurely. Milos Kerkez came on to finish the contest, but the post-match focus rested firmly on Leoni’s condition.
Well-connected transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano was quick to share an update when asked about the situation in his GIVEMESPORT newsletter. His words did little to calm nerves among Liverpool fans.
Romano said: “Not yet, waiting for Liverpool tests. But for sure it looks like not a small injury. Player’s side also waiting for scans and hoping for the best.”
This echoed the cautious tone set by Arne Slot in his own post-match remarks. The Liverpool manager, fresh from delivering a Premier League title in his first season, did not sound optimistic as he discussed his young defender’s problem. The full extent of the injury will only be confirmed once medical scans are completed.
The worry was amplified by injury analyst @physioscout on X, who noted that the ‘knee collapsing in and pivoting nature’ could be ‘suspicious of an ACL injury’. For any player that represents a serious setback, but for a teenager just breaking into the senior squad it could be devastating.
Leoni’s compatriot Federico Chiesa has already reached out with a message of support. Beyond the personal blow to the youngster, the situation could also force a rethink of Liverpool’s Champions League squad registration if the defender is sidelined for a lengthy period.
Anfield has seen its fair share of rising prospects disrupted by injury at crucial moments. Kaide Gordon, Stefan Bajcetic and Calum Scanlon each had their development halted when opportunity seemed to be knocking. That precedent only sharpens the concern for Leoni, whose composure on debut had promised so much.
While initial signs point towards a potentially serious issue, Liverpool’s staff and fans alike will be hoping the scans bring some relief. The player himself is awaiting results with understandable apprehension. What remains clear is that everyone connected with the club wants to see Giovanni Leoni back in red as soon as possible, building on what was such an encouraging start.
