Fabrizio Romano has revealed a crucial update on Ruud van Nistelrooy’s future at Manchester United as incoming manager Ruben Amorim prepares to join the club.
Upon Erik ten Hag’s departure, Van Nistelrooy took over as the club’s interim manager until Amorim could join as Ten Hag’s successor on a permanent basis.
Van Nistelrooy has enjoyed a respectable run as Man United’s interim manager so far, encouraging his team to play free-flowing, attacking football that resulted in a 5-2 win over Leicester City and a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
While the former United striker has expressed a desire to stay at the club even after Amorim joins, there is no guarantee that this will be the case.
Fabrizio Romano revealed that Amorim will have the power to dismiss Van Nistelrooy from United should he choose.
“I wanted to tell you that today, in the press conference, Ruud van Nistelrooy, the interim manager of Manchester United, said the truth; he was not lying. Ruud van Nistelrooy never had any contact so far with Ruben Amorim,” Romano confirmed.
This was before Romano dropped a major bombshell.
“Ruben Amorim wants to make a decision in the next days on the staff and what he wants to do with Ruud van Nistelrooy. So, at the moment, it’s not guaranteed that Ruud van Nistelrooy will stay at Manchester United as part of the staff with Ruben Amorim.”
Although it appears as if Amorim has the discretion to determine Van Nistelrooy’s future if Romano’s claim proves correct, he may want to consider keeping the Dutch former striker in order to win over the United dressing room.
The Peoples Person relayed a report that United players are keen on keeping Van Nistelrooy at the club even as the new manager takes over.
“Van Nistelrooy was appointed assistant manager and quickly formed a bond with the squad, who regarded him as easier to communicate with than ten Hag, would could blow hot and cold with players,” the report claimed.
Tonight, United are set to take on PAOK Salonika in the Europa League in what is Van Nistelrooy’s final game as the interim manager. A win could play a crucial role in convincing Amorim that the United legend is indeed worth keeping around at the club in some capacity, both as a popular and effective coach.
