Goals glut: Twelve goals have only ever been scored in one match in the UEFA Champions League: Borussia Dortmund's 8-4 win away to Legia Warsaw in 2016 – it remains a record today. However, the eight goals in the 4-4 draw between Juventus and Borussia Dortmund are still historic: never before have more goals been scored in one half (there were eight goals on only one other previous occasion: Bayern Munich's 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb a year ago, when the score was 3-0 at half-time).
Highest-scoring draw: There has never been a higher-scoring draw in Champions League history than the 4-4 in Turin. This scoreline occurred for the fifth time on Tuesday. The four previous matches with eight goals but no winner were Hamburger SV vs. Juventus (13 September 2000), Chelsea vs. Liverpool (14 April 2009), Bayer Leverkusen vs. AS Roma (20 October 2015) and Chelsea vs. Ajax (5 November 2019).
History repeats itself: The two head coaches in this week's match were also involved in the first 4-4 in the UEFA Champions League on 13 September 2000, almost 25 years ago exactly. They were also among the goalscorers: Igor Tudor put Juventus 1-0 up at the Volksparkstadion in the sixth minute. Having been 3-1 down, Niko Kovac then scored the goal to put HSV 4-3 in front in the 82nd minute. But Filippo Inzaghi then completed his hat-trick to complete the scoring at 4-4. Kovac and Tudor also played alongside each other 31 times for Croatia.
Penalty: There was initially a minor confrontation between Serhou Guirassy and Ramy Bensebaini, the designated penalty taker, about who would take the spot-kick awarded for handball in the 86th minute. When Bensebaini then coolly slotted home to make it 4-2 for BVB, the two players celebrated the goal together and high-fived each other. Bensebaini thus continued his perfect record from the spot. The Algerian has converted every one of his penalties to date (nine for Mönchengladbach, one for Algeria). On 13 May 2023, he even beat Gregor Kobel from the spot in Borussia Dortmund's 5-2 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
First goal: Yan Couto scored his first goal for Borussia Dortmund on his 40th appearance. The Brazilian scored in the 74th minute to put BVB 3-2 ahead.
When he scores... Since Karim Adeyemi arrived at Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2022, he has scored in 21 games and netted 27 goals in total. BVB have not lost a single one of those games: the record stands at 18 wins and four draws.Compiled by Boris Rupert
