Farewell or extension? Bayern waiting for a signal from Neuer

The future of Manuel Neuer at FC Bayern is suddenly more open than it has been for a long time. What was considered a mere formality for months has developed into a real 50:50 decision. The record champions are waiting for the signal from their captain – and several goalkeepers are listening closely

Manuel Neuer actually wanted to provide sporting stability at this stage of the season. Instead, an injury has forced him to take a break. Tobi Altschäffl assesses the situation in the BILD podcast Bayern Insider: „It’s nothing too serious, of course he’s injured, but it’s not a serious injury now.“ Nevertheless, the absence comes at a sensitive time, as the world champion’s future is being considered at the same time

Christian Falk makes it clear that the situation has changed recently. „Until now, it seemed to be a no-brainer. In fact, the situation is undecided,“ explains the BILD head of soccer. Internally, it is no longer automatically assumed that Neuer will extend his contract. Instead, the goalkeeper himself is intensively considering the question of whether he wants to end his career at its absolute peak

Decision not until spring

According to BILD, Neuer will take his time. „As far as we know, it’s completely 50-50 whether Manuel Neuer will extend or not. He doesn’t know,“ says Altschäffl. A possible title win could play a decisive role in this. „He’s thinking about retiring with major titles, ideally with Bayern.“ The championship, cup and Champions League are still realistic goals

Nevertheless, a concrete time frame is emerging. „His birthday is in March and then the decision should be made in the spring,“ explains Altschäffl. Only then will it be clear whether the captain will remain at FC Bayern for another year or whether a historic chapter will come to an end

While Bayern show patience, the focus is also on the internal goalkeeping hierarchy. Several keepers are following the situation closely, above all Jonas Urbig. Falk praises his development: „He’s doing really, really well as crown prince.“ Should Neuer extend his contract, Urbig could accept a transitional year.
