Francesco Farioli addressed Porto’s supporters in Portuguese during the early hours of Sunday, sharing the credit for the club’s 31st championship.
According to O Jogo, the head coach told fans they had become a team again, echoing Jorge Costa’s words, and said the trophy belonged to all of them. Captain Diogo Costa then stressed the supporters’ importance, saying they had missed these scenes and that there would be more next year.
Some team-mates chose sharper words for the Sporting president and Benfica’s coach, while the crowd kept the focus largely on their own celebration.
The long wait for thousands gathered ended around 1.30am, when players began to file across a structure linking the North Stand to the Coreto, turning the arena into a late-night parade route.
Thiago Silva was the first name called, Victor Froholdt was among the most extrovert, and Rodrigo Mora drew some of the loudest applause. Zaidu showed off dance moves and Pepê proved the most provocative, rubbing both hands over his face as if wiping away tears. A melon was also brandished on stage, then thrown.
While sections of the support aimed chants at rivals, most players on the Coreto concentrated on celebrating the league’s return, four years after the previous title.
