Father of Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick dies hours before Clasico

Barca head coach will be mourning in the home dugout

The father of Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick's father has died hours before Sunday evening Clasico against Real Madrid.

Flick is expected to still take his place in the home dugout for the game, which will see Barcelona secure a second-successive Liga title with a draw or win this evening.

"FC Barcelona and ‌the entire Blaugrana family wish to send all ⁠our love to Hansi Flick after the passing of his father,” a club statement read.

“We share in your sorrow and our thoughts are ‌with you and your family during ‌this difficult ⁠time.”

Real Madrid issued a statement of their own shortly afterwards. It read: “Real Madrid C. F., its president, and its Board of Directors deeply regret the passing of the father of Hansi Flick, coach of F. C. Barcelona.

“Real Madrid wishes to express its condolences and affection to his family and all his loved ones. Rest in peace.”

A tribute is expected to take place ahead of kick-off to make the passing of Flick’s father.

A title-clinching point for Barcelona this evening will now be bittersweet for Flick.

Barcelona are closing in on a 29th league title, and the second in a row.
