Liam Delap’s superb start to the season has been a highlight in Ipswich Town’s return to the Premier League.

The 21-year-old scored his fourth goal in seven Premier League appearances at West Ham this weekend, underlining his potential as one of the brightest young number nines in the division.

Delap signed for Ipswich from Manchester City in the summer as he sought a regular role and is quickly proving that he can handle the rigours of top-flight football. His performances will no doubt be a source of pride to his family, none more so than father Rory.

A cult hero of the Premier League era, Roy made 359 appearances in the division during spells at Derby County, Southampton, Sunderland and Stoke City. His most memorable time came with the latter, where Delap’s dangerous long throws became a potent weapon for The Potters under Tony Pulis.

Liam will be hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps with a long career in the Premier League and has made a solid start at Portman Road. The duo are not the first father and son combination to have played in the Premier League, with some successful over two generations.

Goalkeepers Peter and Kasper Schmeichel are each title winners at Manchester United and Leicester respectively, as is ex-Arsenal forward Ian Wright and son Shaun Wright-Phillips, who won the 2005/06 title with Chelsea.

In total, 23 fathers and sons have played in the Premier League.
