Favio Orsi y Sergio Gómez have agreed in principle to take charge of Newell's with new president Ignacio Boero, starting on Thursday when the first team return to Bella Vista for the 2026 season.
A formal announcement and contract signing are still pending after a Buenos Aires meeting with Boero and new sporting director Roberto Sensini. Their presentation is planned for Thursday as the squad return from holiday to begin a vital pre-season after a dismal finish under interim Lucas Bernardi.
The board first targeted Martín Anselmi, a keen fan despite no personal sporting ties. Finances derailed it, with no deal on his terms and too little budget for reinforcements.
Sensini said the club need a manager for this moment, framing the choice of the duo over Anselmi, a 40-year-old sports journalist who recently coached Porto and is now close to Universidad de Chile.
A third option, the Uruguayan Alexander Medina, was considered before Boero and Sensini leaned towards Orsi-Gómez.
"When we left Platense midway through this year after winning the Apertura, we did so after deep analysis, and in some of the opportunities that followed we were not chosen. There were two chances that mattered to us. Afterwards, we thanked the others that arose, but we preferred to remain out of work by our own decision," he told ESPN.
If all goes to plan after Monday's agreement, the pair could debut in Córdoba on the final weekend of January against Carlos Tevez’s Talleres in the Apertura opener.
