FC Bayern prevailed in an entertaining Supercup encounter in Dortmund. Vincent Kompany's side were efficient in front of goal in the first-half before things got interesting with Niko Kovac's substitutes making an impact.
The hosts had a decent start with debutant Konstantinos Karetsas lively throughout the first twenty minutes. Serhou Guirassy had the first attempt of the game just before Bayern started to dominate proceedings.
Harry Kane attempted an audacious effort from range to catch the onrushing Gregor Kobel in Dortmund’s goal. A minute later, the Rekordmeister opened the scoring as Nathaniel Brown scored a debut goal.
The Germany international, who also scored in each of the last two friendlies, was alert to unleash a well-placed shot after Michael Olise’s excellent play to make use of Joshua Kimmich’s long ball.
Apart from Ramy Bensebaini’s goal from an offside position, Bayern were dominant for the rest of the first-half. Kobel made a decent save to deny Luis Diaz before Brown nearly completed a debut brace.
However, Bayern still managed to double their advantage before the break as Olise scored a solo goal after Jobe Bellingham lost possession in a dangerous area. After the rumors linking him with a move to Real Madrid in the early weeks of the transfer window, the Frenchman once again showed his class with a first-half goal and assist.
Giannis Konstantelias started the second-half as he replaced 18-year-old Italian Samuele Inácio, while Joey Veerman also made his Dortmund debut later in the half. Despite positive signs of a Greek connection for Dortmund, they were unable to thwart Manuel Neuer as the 40-year-old denied Karetsas with a superb reaction save.
Kovac used all his substitutions before the 75th minute mark, and one of his decisions finally brought BVB back into the game. Fabio Silva, who replaced Guirassy with one of the early changes, pulled one back for the hosts with 15 minutes of regular time yet to be played.
Konstantelias initiated the well-worked move by intercepting Jonathan Tah’s poor pass before Daniel Svensson assisted the Portuguese striker. Five minutes later, Ismael Saibari came on for his official debut in place of fellow summer signing Brown.
Bayern managed to regain control after Dortmund’s goal as Kobel had to make a couple of saves from Aleksander Pavlovic and Olise’s efforts. At the other end, Silva’s weak header was the only notable attempt before Bellingham nearly capitalized from Neuer’s howler.
Before the start of the five minutes injury-time, Bensebaini was sent off for his challenge on Saibari. Olise and Maximilian Beier had golden chances at either end in a dramatic ending to the game as Bayern clinched their 12th Supercup title. The Bavarians have won both editions since the competition’s name was changed to honor Franz Beckenbauer.
Kompany’s side will host Stuttgart when Bundesliga starts on Friday. Dortmund will also be at home against HSV with the season’s first Topspiel next weekend.
