FC Bayern have extended the contract of sporting director Christoph Freund until 30 June 2029. The 49-year-old Austrian came to Munich in summer 2023 from RB Salzburg, having successfully worked in the Austrian top-flight club’s management for 17 years. During his time so far, FC Bayern have won two Bundesliga titles, the DFB Cup and the German Supercup twice.
Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO: “Christoph Freund plays a central role in all of our sporting decisions – and we are pleased that he will continue to work for FC Bayern in the future. The successes of recent years are in part thanks to his stellar work. Christoph maintains an excellent working relationship with Vincent Kompany, is closely involved with the team and, at the same time, keeps a close eye on all sporting matters. When he joined FC Bayern in 2023, we expected him not only to provide important impetus for our first team, but also to bring a fresh approach to youth development and the link between the first team and the Campus. He has more than fulfilled those expectations, and we look forward to continuing to develop our whole sporting division together with him.”
Max Eberl, board member for sport: “I am delighted that Christoph will continue to work with all of us on FC Bayern’s sporting direction. Christoph is a valuable member of our team and a central figure in the sporting division, from the first team and staff down to the FC Bayern Campus. We complement each other in our day-to-day work, enjoy working together and are always guided by the shared goal of constantly pushing FC Bayern forward.”
Christoph Freund, sporting director: “I am very happy that I can continue contributing to FC Bayern’s development in the future. FC Bayern is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and this role has become a labour of love for me since I started here. We have set out on an exciting journey together, and there is still a lot we want to achieve. It is incredibly fulfilling to work together here to keep generating fresh impetus so that FC Bayern remain exactly where our fans, and all of us, want to see them: right at the very top.”
