FC Groningen are set to strengthen their squad with the signing of Swedish talent Elvis van der Laan, according to Swedish outlet Expressen. The 17-year-old Van der Laan joins from AIK Fotboll, where he is considered a promising prospect.

Van der Laan made his senior debut for AIK at the back end of April this year. The right-back played 90 minutes straight away and impressed immediately. After his breakthrough, he appeared on Groningen’s radar. ‘The Pride of the North’ have reportedly already reached an agreement with AIK regarding a transfer fee.

AIK are not disclosing the amount, but according to Transfermarkt, the young stopper is expected to cost around €100,000. The Stockholm club, who transferred Van der Laan to the first team last winter, were eager to continue with him.

The team have tried several times to renegotiate his contract, but without success. The only thing remaining between his presentation in Groningen is the medical. If the Swedish youth international successfully passes that, he can be presented this week.

If it wasn’t already clear from his surname, Van der Laan has a Dutch father. It’s unknown whether Groningen immediately sees him as an asset to the first team. However, it is clear that Dick Lukkien’s side have already been quite active in the transfer market. In just a few days, they have strengthened their squad with Younes Taha (FC Twente), Oskar Zawada (RKC Waalwijk), and Tyrique Mercera (SC Cambuur).
