João Brandão’s FC Porto B have reached round 21 in mid-table. They are doing so with the club’s youngest squad in six years, with an average age under 20, in a notably tight II Liga.
According to O Jogo, Felipe Silva is the oldest player at 23, and the calculation excludes occasional senior reinforcements such as João Costa.
Early growing pains were clear, as the first win came only in the eighth round, a 1-0 victory over Marítimo.
Since December the revival has gathered pace, with only two defeats and one draw in eight matches, easing them away from immediate danger.
The youth is evident on matchdays too. The 11 who beat Sporting B in January averaged 19.5 years, with Kaué and Gabriel Brás, both 21, the oldest to finish that game.
Across the last eight seasons, the 20th round has never seen such a small gap between third and 15th. It stands at 10 points between Sporting B and Oliveirense.
