FC Porto B lose 0-3 to FC Penafiel in the Segunda Liga | OneFootball

FC Porto B lost 0-3 to FC Penafiel at the CTFD Jorge Costa in a match from the 4th round of the Segunda Liga. Afterwards, João Brandão explained that he felt “from the start” that “the team did not have the levels of aggression required to play” in this competition, where there are also “permissive referees who let fouls go.” The coach of Porto’s B team also highlighted: “Today there were ten under-19 players on the match sheet. They are young players with talent and room to grow, but this is the context of the Segunda Liga. We have already shown what we are capable of and we will look to do it more consistently.”

Reading of the match “I don’t think we started the game badly, but from the beginning I felt that the team did not have the levels of aggression required to play in the Segunda Liga. That was evident in the move for the second goal, when we allowed an inside pass within our block, and the first came from a throw-in where we had to win the aerial duels. This ran through the whole game. In the second half we tried to bring fresh energy and ideas with the introduction of Eduardo Ferreira. We tried to build differently, because in the first half we were being too predictable and did too little to move FC Penafiel’s block around. The team did not give up and kept pushing, but throughout the game we were unable to win duels and commit fouls, which says a lot about the difference in aggression.”

Eduardo Ferreira came on in the second half “We tried to be more aggressive with our high press, as Cardoso Varela was too tucked in with that in the first half. But then it is important to have defensive cover behind the press and to get people into the duels. Eduardo Ferreira’s introduction was in that direction, because he is very aggressive in the press and allowed us to screen the game better further forward. We tried to gain an advantage on FC Penafiel’s back line with the forwards, but from a certain point on we lost our organization and started overdoing the long balls. From then on, the game opened up.”

Youth with talent in the squad “Growth is a process and a long road. Today there were ten under-19 players on the match sheet. They are young players with talent and room to grow, but this is the context of the Segunda Liga, with permissive referees who let fouls go. We have already shown what we are capable of and we will look to do it more consistently.”
