FC Porto have marked the death of Franco Baresi, aged 66, by recalling their unforgettable Champions League meetings with Milan in the 1990s.

The club said in a post that it shares the football world’s grief, especially at Milan and with Italy’s national team, describing Baresi as a tough and loyal rival, and offering condolences to his family, friends and supporters.

Widely regarded as one of the game’s most decorated defenders, Baresi spent 20 seasons at Milan, 15 as captain, and made 719 appearances. He won 21 trophies with the club, including six Italian league titles.

On the European and international stage he lifted three European Cups or Champions Leagues in 1988/89, 1989/90 and 1993/94, two Intercontinental Cups in 1989 and 1990, and three European Super Cups in 1989, 1990 and 1994.

With the Italy senior team, Baresi was part of the squad that won the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
