Dutch second tier side FC Volendam have announced the signing of 35-year-old Vurnon Anita on free transfer. The veteran midfielder has signed for the side who were relegated from the Eredivisie last season on a short term deal that will run to the end of the current campaign. Anita has been a free agent since his contract with Al-Arobah in Saudi-Arabia came to an end last year.
Anita brings a wealth of experience to the Dutch second tier side. He began his career at Ajax before spending a few seasons in England with Newcastle United, where he played 155 times and scored three goals. He then spent the 2017/2018 season at Leeds United before briefly returning to the Netherlands. After 31 games for Willem II he had a short period in Bulgaria with CSKA Sofia before a return to RKC Waalwijk. After 97 games for the latter he then had his brief time in the Middle-East with Al-Orobah FC.
Volendam are currently on course for an immediate return to the Eredivisie. They are one point ahead of Excelsior at the top of the Eerste Divisie, and more importantly they are seven ahead of third placed FC Dordrecht.
