Ronald Koeman Jr scored a late penalty to earn Telstar a vital three points against FC Volendam on Sunday afternoon. The goalkeeper, son of the former Barcelona and current Netherlands head coach, scored in the 89th minute to earn Telstar all three points and ensure that they, against all the odds, will be playing in the Eredivisie next season. On the other hand, Volendam will now have to fight for their survival via the play-offs.

The winner of the clash would have guaranteed their safety, and the home side Volendam got off to the best of starts with Anthony Descotte scoring after just two minutes. However, Danny Bakker equalised for Telstar just before the break, with Koeman, of all players, scoring from the spot. The 30-year-old keeper scored his first goal for Telstar and it was fitting that it was the son of the Dutch coach who confirmed Telstar remained in the Eredivisie. During the promotion play-offs last season it was Koeman who had been key in the side shocking Dutch football and earning promotion.

Despite being favourites to go straight back down, Telstar defied everyone under head coach Anthony Correia. Next season, Correia is off to Utrecht and it will be interesting to see if Telstar can survive again next season without him. But for now, they can celebrate survival, while Volendam must prepare to face Willem II in the battle for the final spot in the Eredivisie for the 2026/2027 season.
