FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit expects Danny Rohl to leave at the end of the season.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl could leave the club at the end of the season.
The 35-year-old has been linked with a move away from Hillsborough, with Premier League strugglers Southampton and Leicester City both having been named as potential suitors.
Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons once again in recent weeks, as the players and staff at the club were not paid their wages for March until well into April.
That delay would have done nothing to convince an already visibly frustrated Rohl that he should stay at Sheffield Wednesday beyond this season, so it seems increasingly likely that he will leave and take on a new role ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
We asked our Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, Patrick McKenna, whether he could see Rohl being tempted to walk out of the club amid the issues surrounding Chansiri of late.
"Could I see Danny Rohl being tempted to walk out of the club because of the issues of late? I think we have already seen the toll that this has taken on Danny Rohl in the past few weeks," Patrick said.
"In his pre-match and post-match press conferences, the man just looks absolutely fed up, and drained by the extra toll of players and himself not being paid.
"He hasn't hidden from it. He hasn't danced around the subject. He has stated that it is hard to manage. It is causing an unnecessary additional strain, and I think it was quite telling that, when he was asked whether he had spoken to the chairman, he said he had spoken to the club.
"You can see it. After the game on Saturday, there was a video captured of him where he was acknowledging the fans, but he looked drained, so if there are any Sheffield Wednesday fans not talking about him leaving in the summer, we are kidding ourselves.
"These latest issues have just completely pushed him over the edge. Ever since he joined the club, it has been an uphill battle. He is firefighting. He is the only man who has taken responsibility to address the lack of structure and the poor infrastructure at the club.
"He wasn't backed by the chairman in January, and, of course, this is a chairman who has been willing to publicly throw Danny Rohl under the bus. Recently, Danny Rohl was left fronting questions regarding the non-payment of players.
"I know Danny Rohl did sign a new contract in the summer, but that was bound to have been on the basis of promises and assurances. None of these have been given, so yeah, it has been really disheartening as a Wednesday fan to see Danny's demeanor over the past few weeks.
"As professional as Danny is compared to our chairman, he cannot hide it - he is fed up.
"He will probably leave if anyone comes in for him, whether it be Southampton or Leicester, or any club that pays him at this stage.
"It is such a shame that the best manager we have had since being relegated from the Premier League, who was Chansiri's last shot at redemption and could have taken us back to the Premier League, has slipped from our grasp.
"The latest absolute nonsense with the wages - that is just the final act to push a great man over the edge."
As frustrating as it will be for Sheffield Wednesday supporters if Rohl does leave this summer, it could get even worse if he takes the reins at one of the relegated clubs ahead of next season.
Given what the German has achieved under difficult circumstances in South Yorkshire, it would be no surprise to see him thrive at a club with one of the biggest budgets in the division, such as Southampton or Leicester.
There may be some Wednesday fans who will be happy for Rohl if he finds a club that backs him and allows him to be successful in the Championship, but there would no doubt be frustration that he was not able to properly implement his ideas at Hillsborough instead.
