Alberto Núñez Feijóo has condemned an attempt to sabotage the big-screen showing of the 2026 World Cup final in Bilbao. The screen had been set up by the Partido Popular for fans to watch Spain face Argentina.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, trouble began about 40 minutes before kick-off as hundreds gathered at the pergola in Doña Casilda park. Some participants in a Zazpi Baietz march backing the Basque national team moved towards the site, came in behind the screen and started throwing barriers, causing damage and hurling bottles, prompting some spectators to flee.

The attackers briefly cut the feed after pulling out cables, although the broadcast was later restored, amid a heavy Ertzaintza presence.

Bilbao council’s PP spokesperson, Esther Martínez, was at the scene and confronted the group. In a post on X, Feijóo praised Martínez and the Basque PP, said Spain is great and urged standing up to totalitarianism, closing with a Viva España message. He said habitual disruptors had tried to spoil the party but failed.

In total, 20 people were identified in Bilbao as part of the security operation around the final, including one person under investigation.
