Felipe Caicedo has suggested Sunderland’s new arrival Nilson Angulo could have joined a top-six Premier League side had he waited until summer.
Angulo, 22, sealed a permanent move from Anderlecht on Monday for an initial £15 million, with a further £2.5 million in potential add-ons. He had registered six goals and seven assists in 22 Belgian league matches.
“An obvious leap in quality [from the Belgian top flight to the Premier League]... But I think if he had waited six months until the end of the season, he would have signed for a top-six Premier League team.” He was speaking to Olé.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman described the Ecuador international as an exciting, quick and creative wide player who excels in key actions in the final third. He said Angulo is ambitious and already experienced domestically, in Europe and with Ecuador.
The signing coincided with Simon Adingra’s departure, the Ivorian joining AS Monaco on an initial loan that includes an option to buy.
Speakman called the move a mutually agreeable solution that should ensure Adingra plays regularly in the second half of the season. He said the stature of the switch underlines the attacker’s quality and professionalism, and that the club will monitor him closely.
