Felipe Longo shines for Corinthians, joins 21st-century club ranking

Corinthians was defeated by Cruzeiro on the night of last Sunday (23), at Mineirão Stadium, in a match valid for the 35th round of the Brazilian Championship. With the setback, the Alvinegro stagnated in tenth place with 45 points (12 wins, nine draws, and 14 losses – 38 goals scored and 42 conceded).

The match was marked by goalkeeper Felipe Longo's sixth appearance for the Corinthians professional team, making him the third homegrown player in his position with the most games for the Alvinegro's main squad in his debut year. He surpassed Matheus Donelli, who played five matches in the 2021 season and made his debut in a Derby, in Itaquera, during the Paulistão.

The survey was published by the portal Meu Timão. Rubinho leads the ranking with 14 games played in 2001, his debut year in the main team – he stayed at the club until 2004. In second place is Marcelo, who played 11 matches in 2005, remaining at Parque São Jorge until 2007.

Felipe Longo has been getting a run of games at Corinthians since October. This is because goalkeeper Hugo Souza was unavailable at the beginning of October as he was serving the Brazilian National Team during a FIFA Date. Later, towards the end of the same month, the number 1 shirt suffered a shoulder injury and is currently recovering from a muscle injury in his left thigh, being sidelined since November 2.

At 20 years old, Felipe Longo joined Corinthians when he was just eight, playing in all futsal and field youth categories. Counting the U-17 and U-20, he played 105 games (39 with the younger team and 36 with the older), with 45 wins, 14 draws, and 16 losses.

His most significant titles in Corinthians' youth categories were the 2021 U-17 Paulista Championship, against Palmeiras at Allianz Parque, and the 2024 São Paulo Cup, against Cruzeiro at Neo Química Arena. In the first, he was Kauê Camarago's backup. In the second, he was the undisputed starter, as Kauê was out with an ACL injury.

While Hugo Souza, who has already started physical transition, does not return from injury, Felipe Longo should continue getting more games at Corinthians. The Alvinegro will return to the pitch next Sunday (30), at 4pm (Brasília time), at Neo Química Arena, for the 36th round of the Brazilian Championship.

The club from Parque São Jorge aims to finish the Brasileirão at least in eighth place to have a chance of securing a spot in the Libertadores (preliminary phase), in case they do not win the Copa do Brasil – which grants a direct spot in the group stage of the international competition.
