Felipe VI only free to watch Spain again if they reach World Cup final

Felipe VI is only available to watch Spain again at the World Cup if the team make the final, with his agenda blocking the earlier rounds.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, his official diary allows no trip before then. On Friday 10 July he is due in Murcia for the presentation of Reales Despachos at the General Air and Space Academy, the ceremony that culminates Princess Leonor’s military training, and on Tuesday 14 he will join Queen Letizia to preside over the Princess of Girona Awards at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

Spain face Belgium in the quarter-final on Friday 10 July, the same day the King, Queen and Sofía will be in San Javier to accompany Leonor at the end of her military stage. If Spain advance, a semi-final against France or Morocco would follow on Tuesday 14, clashing with the Barcelona engagement.

The final on Sunday 19 July in New York is the only date that fits. If Spain reach it, the match would not overlap with any announced royal duty.

On 25 June, Felipe VI travelled to Guadalajara, Mexico, to watch Spain play Uruguay. Before the game he met President Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City, a meeting used to ease the diplomatic rift after the Mexican government excluded the King from her inauguration and maintained its call for an apology over abuses during the conquest of America. The World Cup became the setting for that thaw.
