Manchester United face a threat from a Premier League rival in their pursuit of yet another top target in midfield as Newcastle United enter the race for Borussia Dortmund dynamo Felix Nmecha, according to a new report.
Nmecha, 25, is currently enjoying a superb start to the World Cup with Germany, having scored in the 7-1 demolition of Curaçao and assisted the last-minute winner against Ivory Coast.
Two wins from two secured Julian Nagelsmann’s side automatic qualification for the knockout stages as they were assured of a first-place finish, with Nmecha praised as “world class” by his manager and Joshua Kimmich.
This meant Nagelsmann, who was a candidate to take charge at Old Trafford in the wake of Ruben Amorim’s dismissal, could rest players for a dead rubber against Ecuador, which the South Americans emerged 2-1 winners from.
Offering a potent pairing of physical and technical qualities, it is easy to see why Nmecha has been described as “exceptional” by his former coach at the Signal Iduna Park, Nuri Sahin, who believes he can play any role in midfield.
The Hamburg native possesses an imposing 6’3″ frame, though he retains excellent mobility for a player of that size. His ball-carrying is outstanding, while his ability to be decisive in the final third – five goals and three assists for Dortmund last season – shows a midfielder able to dominate across all phases of play.

Having translated his stellar form in Germany onto football’s grandest stage in North America, it is easy to see why England’s top clubs, including Manchester United, have expressed interest in a player whose profile translates to the Premier League perfectly.
A report relayed by The Peoples Person revealed the Red Devils were joined by Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City – the club Nmecha came through as an academy graduate – in their admiration.
Further afield, Spanish rivals FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are also in the hunt, while Bayern Munich will always be interested in a German star thriving in the Bundesliga. Sky Sports Germany claims United are “intensifying their efforts” to strike a deal ahead of their rivals.
Led by sporting director Christopher Vivell, an expert in German football, contact has been made with Nmecha’s camp, though club-to-club negotiations are yet to begin.
However, Craig Hope now reveals Newcastle United have thrown their hat into the ring as the Magpies brace for the loss of Sandro Tonali. The Italy international looks set to join Tottenham Hotspur, despite being a target at Old Trafford.
The Daily Mail reporter claims Dortmund may be prepared to negotiate on his £73.5 million release clause, though different sources contend this only comes into effect next year. Regardless, if the Magpies accept a club-record fee from Tottenham Hotspur for Tonali, they will have the cash to splash on his replacement.
Having already lost Elliot Anderson to Manchester City, while Tottenham Hotspur close in on a deal for Mateus Fernandes, if Manchester United were to lose another target to a direct rival, the prospect of Michael Carrick being able to build on last season’s success would begin to dwindle.
However, the allure of Champions League football on offer at England’s biggest club in the Premier League’s biggest stadium, in comparison to no Europe on Tyneside, should be enough to help Vivell convince Nmecha to choose Old Trafford over St James’ Park. Just ask Bryan Mbeumo or Mateus Cunha , who both made that choice last summer.
