Manchester United are showing signs of withdrawing from the race to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United.
At one point, United appeared to be in the driving seat to land Fernandes, who is thought to be “desperate” to join the Red Devils and play alongside his idol, Bruno Fernandes.
However, United have no desire to meet West Ham’s £85 million valuation. Initially, it was thought the Hammers would be forced to lower their demands, but with Tottenham prepared to spend recklessly, INEOS find themselves in a difficult situation.
They remain adamant that they will not be held to ransom and are prepared to walk away. A report in Germany suggests they are already considering signing another midfielder.
According to Sky Sports Germany, Manchester United are intensifying their efforts to sign Felix Nmecha from Borussia Dortmund.
The 6ft 3in tall midfielder, who is known for his exceptional athleticism and technical ability, enjoyed a promising season in the Bundesliga last year.
Nmecha is also starting to establish himself as one of Germany’s best players, having impressed with his strong performances in the World Cup.
Apart from his dominant displays in the middle of the park, Nmecha has also influenced the game in the final third. The 25-year-old scored a goal against Curaçao and registered a brilliant assist against the Ivory Coast.
Nmecha’s performances have also attracted the interest of Liverpool, Real Madrid and his former club, Manchester City, who are all closely monitoring the dynamic midfielder.
However, at the moment, United are pushing ahead with their efforts to sign the Germany international.
It is understood United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is in close contact with the player’s camp.
Dortmund only extended Nmecha’s contract until 2030 earlier this year, in March.
Accordingly, it is thought the Bundesliga giants would only consider a sale if a very high offer is made.

A separate report from BILD suggested that Dortmund have set a high asking price to ward off his suitors, who have been told they need €120 million (£104m) if they are to sign Nmecha this summer.
The German’s new contract includes a release clause for 2027 valued at €80m.
