Fenerbahce Overtake Roma in Race to Acquire Greenwood

Fenerbahce have zoomed past Roma in the chase of Mason Greenwood. They could get a slight discount from the initial €50M request, but the deal will still cost well above €40M, Alfredo Pedullà reports.

The Englishman had long been open to the destination. The Turkish side offered him a lot more than the other team salary-wise. The Giallorossi have started to contemplate alternative options. However, Dan Ndoye isn’t an attainable target at this stage despite some recent scuttlebutt. They have been offered Porto’s Pepe, but they are only lukewarm on him. The same goes for Real Betis’ Antony and Stuttgart’s Jamie Leweling, while West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville is likely too expensive.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Roma never submitted a formal bid for Greenwood due to the figures involved, and Fenerbahce could seal the deal in the coming days. Per Corriere dello Sport, the Giallorossi backed out also not to irk UEFA after failing to make any relevant sale until now. Plus, handing him hefty wages could have altered the locker room balance. A few players could have asked for a rise, putting the club in a bind.

The Giallorossi could take a look at Assane Diao, who could be the odd man out at Como for financial reasons after a subpar and injury-riddled season, Tuttomercatoweb informs. His valuation is about €25/30M.

Our Take on Roma and Greenwood

Their owners don’t lack cash, but the constraints are real. The deal always looked a bit too onerous for any Serie A side, let alone one in their situation. Still, considering that a big investment appears to be in the card, they can bounce back nicely if they don’t get fixated on signing only super accomplished players.
