Real Madrid brushed aside Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie on Wednesday, but Ferland Mendy’s injury clouded the win for Alvaro Arbeloa.

According to Football Espana, Arbeloa was already without Alvaro Carreras, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe at the Bernabeu. Mendy, starting again, broke down before the interval and was withdrawn at half time, with Fran Garcia coming on.

Arbeloa said the issue did not look good. Mendy is due to undergo tests on Thursday to determine the extent and whether it means another spell out.

What is certain is that he will not face Elche this weekend, which would leave Garcia as the only available left-back. Arbeloa has generally hesitated to lean on the La Fabrica graduate since taking charge, especially compared with predecessor Xabi Alonso.

Carreras is expected to be back for the second leg against City, though he would lack full match sharpness. Whether Mendy can travel to Manchester next week remains unclear.

Madrid expect more clarity within the next 24 to 48 hours and hope the setback is not another long-term problem for the defender.
