The Spanish national team playing in this World Cup 2026 has up to 8 players from FC Barcelona, including Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia, Pau Cubarsi, Pedri, Gavi, Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal, and Ferran Torres. This number could easily have been 9 as another Blaugrana midfielder, Fermin Lopez, has been regularly called up by Luis de la Fuente, but was unable to participate in this World Cup because of an injury.

He suffered this injury, a fracture of the fifth metatarsal of his right foot, on 17th May, during a match against Real Betis. The midfielder had to undergo a surgery because of this issue, and was expected to spend three months on the sidelines.

His recovery has gone well up to now, as he has already spent around half the expected time on the sidelines, and is expected to be back available when the Catalans start their next league campaign.

Meanwhile, Mundo Deportivo has provided an update on this recovery process, and reports that after weeks of rigorous gym and swimming pool sessions, Fermin has now also started to run, and thus his recovery is going in line with the plan set by the physiotherapist Jose Cortes.

If the rest of the recovery plans continues to remain in accord with this plan, he would be available for the 2026-27 La Liga opener against Athletic Club on 16th August. But the chances of his availability would be particularly strong if at least one Blaugrana player makes it to the semi-final of the World Cup, which would delay the start of the league for Barcelona by a week.

Hopefully, Fermin Lopez would continue working hard to get over this injury as soon as possible, and would return in even better shape and spirits to continue remaining a key player for the Barcelona coach Hansi Flick for the upcoming season.
