Rasmus Hojlund scored a brace to help Manchester United beat Viktoria Plzen 2-1 in the Europa League yesterday.
The striker was named the man of the match, but he was not the Red Devils’ best player. Bruno Fernandes was the standout performer.
The Portuguese was named one of United’s key players in our pre-match preview, and he did not disappoint.
Fernandes was heavily involved throughout the contest, making himself available to help in the build-up.
He had 111 touches, the second-highest in the United team. Only Lisandro Martinez (112) had more.
Fernandes was at the heart of most of United’s attacks. The Portuguese recorded seven key passes, a tally not bettered by any player. He also created the most big chances in the game.
The captain showed his intelligence to set up Hojlund for the winning goal with a delightful pass.
Fernandes also worked his socks off without the ball. He was involved in nine ground duels, one more than his midfield partner Casemiro. Fernandes won four.
The 30-year-old contested seven aerial duels, four of which he won to show his determination in helping United get a victory.
United need to be at their best to beat Manchester City this weekend.
Just as he gave a brilliant all-round display against Plzen, manager Ruben Amorim needs Fernandes to do the same against City.
Man City have been vulnerable defensively this season. They have conceded more goals than relegation-threatened Crystal Palace.
With Fernandes’ creativity, the Red Devils can take advantage of their defensive vulnerability to record their first victory at the Etihad Stadium since 2021.
