Manchester United needed every ounce of composure from captain Bruno Fernandes to snatch victory against Burnley in a pulsating Premier League clash at Old Trafford. The Portuguese midfielder converted an injury-time penalty to seal a 3-2 win that highlighted both United’s attacking flair and their defensive fragility.
For manager Ruben Amorim, it was a result that kept momentum building, but the manner of the victory will also provide food for thought.
United’s recurring problems between the posts nearly cost them dearly again. Altay Bayindir, deputising in goal, was culpable for Burnley’s second equaliser. His handling error gifted Jaidon Anthony a simple finish, bringing the visitors level and threatening to take two precious points from United’s grasp.
Earlier in the game, United twice moved in front, only to see their lead pegged back. Burnley, under Scott Parker, showed spirit and resilience, refusing to roll over at Old Trafford and instead forcing their way back into the contest.
Anthony embodied that defiance, finishing clinically to punish United’s errors. Yet football’s fine margins turned him from hero to villain in stoppage time.

As the match ticked deep into injury time, Amad drove into the Burnley penalty area. In a desperate attempt to stop him, Anthony tugged his shirt, contact that began outside the area but continued as Amad burst forward.
Referee Sam Barrott initially waved play on, but VAR official Stuart Attwell intervened. After a lengthy four-minute review and a check at the pitchside monitor, Barrott reversed his decision. The penalty was awarded, sparking furious Burnley protests and tension around the ground.
Fernandes, who had missed from the spot against Fulham six days earlier, shouldered the responsibility once again. He composed himself, took a deep breath and sent his effort into the bottom corner, sparking relief and jubilation inside Old Trafford.
The 3-2 scoreline underlined United’s ability to grind out results, but also their vulnerability in defence. Bayindir’s mistake will once again raise questions over the club’s goalkeeping depth, while the back four failed to deal decisively with Burnley’s energy.
Amorim will take satisfaction in the victory and Fernandes’ leadership, but he knows improvement is essential if United are to sustain a title challenge. Burnley, meanwhile, can take pride in their performance, having pushed one of the Premier League’s giants to the brink in their own stadium.
For United fans, this was a night of nerves, drama and ultimately triumph. For Burnley, it was another reminder of the fine margins that define survival at the top level.
