Fernando Chalana would have turned 67 today. The former Benfica midfielder remains a touchstone for generations of supporters, celebrated for his talent and his devotion to the badge.

According to Glorioso 1904, he came through at Benfica, debuting for the first team as a teenager and quickly standing out. Slight of frame yet blessed with superb technique, speed and one against one prowess, he became central to the attack in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

On the international stage his peak arrived at Euro 1984 with Portugal. His displays in France put him in the European spotlight and earned a move to Bordeaux, making him one of the first Portuguese to thrive in a major foreign league.

He later returned to Benfica at a different stage of his career, maintaining a deep bond with the club. After retiring, he stayed in the game and at Benfica, taking technical roles and supporting younger players.

Almost four years on from his death, Chalana retains a unique place in the club’s history. His name is synonymous with creativity, irreverence and pure talent, qualities still tied to Benfica that make the ‘pequeno génio’ an enduring figure in its lore.
