Fernando Diniz has explained why Gui Negão has not featured for Corinthians, speaking after Saturday’s 3-1 win over Grêmio. The coach said in a press conference that the forward’s minutes have been limited by his recent return and competition for places.

Gui Negão suffered a right hamstring injury in March during Brazil Under-20 training, which kept him out until mid May. Diniz noted he has been in charge for less than two months and the player has been available to him for under a month.

He added that the player has trained well and is someone he likes, recalling a strong display against Vasco in 2025 when he was coaching them. He stressed it is about opportunity, with only five substitutions, and the forward might have featured if there were more. He said opportunities could come in the second half of the year when domestic football resumes after the World Cup break.

Gui Negão’s last appearance for Corinthians was the 1-1 draw with Flamengo on 22 March in the Brasileirão, shortly before that injury. He returned to availability on three May, for the match against Mirassol under Diniz, but has not played since, spending six games on the bench and missing three squads.

Like the rest of the squad, he is now on holiday and will resume on 25 June for an interseason programme. Corinthians plan a friendly with Cascavel on 12 July, then face Remo in the Brasileirão on 22 July.
