The injury came in the Copa do Brasil win at Barra on Tuesday. Kayke felt severe knee pain in the first half and, in tears, was replaced immediately.

It interrupted a breakthrough run, five straight starts and a place in every XI since Diniz arrived. He had scored against Platense in the first round of the Libertadores.

Diniz has urged him to focus on positives, noting the forward has proved himself to fans and the Brazilian market. He wants the best recovery conditions so Kayke can learn and return stronger, and hopes to be in charge when he does.

Kayke now joins Memphis Depay, treating an anterior right thigh injury, and Gui Negão, out with a grade 2 strain in the posterior muscle of the same area. João Pedro Tchoca, Hugo Farias and Charles are also sidelined.

Without him, options to partner Yuri Alberto include Vitinho, Dieguinho, Kaio César and Pedro Raul. Corinthians host Peñarol at the Neo Química Arena on Thursday, 30 April, at 21:00, in the third round of the Libertadores group stage.
