Fernando Diniz faces criticism from some Vasco fans after January defeats to Flamengo and Mirassol. His season record is two wins, one draw and two defeats.
According to Globo.com, he joined in May last year to lift the club out of the relegation zone. A mid-season surge, after reaching the Copa do Brasil semi-finals, put Vasco in the Libertadores mix before a run of seven losses in eight left them 14th, although they finished runners-up in the cup.
Performances against Flamengo in the Carioca and Mirassol in the Brasileirão opener revived questions. Long-standing build-up flaws and collective defensive problems persisted.
Over 48 matches he has 16 wins, 12 draws and 20 defeats. Even with a modest return, his work is viewed positively, including the Copa do Brasil final, Rayan’s development and a major role in recruitment.
He is closely aligned with president Pedrinho and technical director Felipe. Late last season, the hierarchy blamed players more than the coach. He had freedom in the latest window and remains active on signings.
He is considered a draw for players, with Saldivia, Brenner and Marino Hinestroza citing repeated calls from him on arrival at São Januário. Vasco are confident he can improve results, especially after adding Brenner and Hinestroza and other reinforcements.
The squad is judged to need more depth for 2026, which includes the Carioca, Brasileirão, Copa do Brasil and Copa Sudamericana, and the club want to return to winning titles and play the 2027 Libertadores.
