Fernando Santos departs as Azerbaijan manager without a win

Fernando Santos's stint with the Azerbaijan national team has come to an end, as announced by the country's federation this Monday.

Hired in June 2024, the Portuguese coach did not secure a victory in any of the 11 matches he led the Azerbaijani side.

Despite increasing pressure, Fernando Santos reiterated his desire to fulfil his contract, even after a 5-0 defeat in Iceland.

Following his departure from the Portuguese national team, where he won Euro 2016 and the 2018/19 Nations League, the coach had brief spells in Poland and with Besiktas, before his venture in Azerbaijan.

Aykhan Abbasov, the Under-21 coach, will take charge of the Azerbaijan senior team this Tuesday, hosting Ukraine.
