Fernando Torres announces retirement | OneFootball

Spanish football legend Fernando Torres has announced that he will retire from the game after an 18-year career.

Via a video he posted on social media, the striker revealed that more details will be made available at a press conference on Sunday.

Torres is currently plying his trade in Japan with Sagan Tosu.

Although his side are midway through the season, the striker has made the decision to hang up his boots at the age of 35.

Torres began his career with boyhood club Atlético Madrid and returned to them in 2015 after periods in England and Italy.

After a massively successful spell with Liverpool, he failed to hit the same heights at either Chelsea or Milan.

In his second spell with the Rojiblancos, he won the Europa League and also finished as a runner-up in the Champions League.

For his country, the Fuenlabrada native was capped 110 times and scored 38 goals.

The most important of them undoubtedly came in the Euro 2008 final against Germany – which was the only goal of the game.

Torres is set to retire after falling marginally short of the 300-goal mark for his career, notching 298 in total.
