Ferran Torres gives Spain the lead in extra time against Argentina

Ferran Torres has put Spain 1-0 up against Argentina in extra time of the World Cup final in New York. The Barcelona forward struck in the 106th minute.

It came on the first move of the second period of extra time, a fierce left-foot finish at last breaking Argentina’s resistance.

Pedro Porro delivered a perfect cross. Nico Williams, wasteful since coming on, produced a clever cut-back for Torres, who was ideally placed.

The Valencia academy graduate thumped home after a sweeping passage in which nine Spain players touched the ball.

It was a lead that matched Spain’s control, with Dibu Martinez outstanding until then. Sixteen years after Andrés Iniesta, the saviour may just be Ferran Torres.
