Despite pursuing a permanent transfer of Calvin Stengs all summer, it appears that Antwerp are set to miss out on one of their main targets. The Dutch winger, who played as a central midfielder during Antwerp’s title win last season, looks set to join Feyenoord instead. HLN, amongst others, are reporting that the Dutch side are going to beat Antwerp to signing Stengs, despite an agreement having been reached between Antwerp and the Nice player on a contract for the 2023/2024 season.
Feyenoord are managed by Steng’s former head coach Arne Slot, who it is believed was one of the main reasons why Stengs has decided to return to the Netherlands rather than go back to Belgium. Feyenoord have also outbid Antwerp and are willing to help Nice recoup more of what they spent on signing Stengs are few seasons ago.
In July 2021, Stengs moved from AZ Alkmaar to OGC Nice for €15m. The seven-time Netherlands international has failed to impress in France. In total, he’s featured 32 times scoring just one goal and providing one assist. The transfer fee between Antwerp and Nice is expected to be considerably lower than what Nice originally paid for the player.
