FIFA has banned supporters from bringing their own water bottles into 2026 World Cup stadiums, citing safety, after previously indicating they would be allowed.

According to The Athletic, an email to ticket holders said reusable water bottles are no longer permitted in tournament venues. Reuters reports FIFA said the move is to prevent any risk and injury to players and spectators.

Only three weeks ago, the federation’s stadium code of conduct stated that empty, transparent, reusable plastic bottles up to one litre could be taken inside.

The change has prompted concern among fans about coping with heat, with temperatures in some venues expected to sit between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius. At the Club World Cup, bottled water was priced between 4 and 6 euros.

Heat mitigation measures around stadiums may include misting stations, fans, hydration points and cooling tents.
