A FIFA delegation visited Anoeta in Amara, San Sebastián, on Friday as part of inspections of shortlisted Spanish venues for the 2030 World Cup, with stadium screens welcoming them with “ongi etorri FIFA” and a message of global ambition.
According to Diario Vasco, officials audited infrastructure, access and modernity, with Eduard Dervishaj, the RFEF’s director of international relations, among those present from the organisation led by Gianni Infantino.
The visit came as doubts resurfaced after RFEF president Rafael Louzán said a letter from San Sebastián residents opposed hosting and raised other local issues. The scoreboard message looked a riposte, and mayor Jon Insausti later said residents could be reassured, with events brought for the city’s benefit.
FIFA has inspected Anoeta before, and this stop concluded a programme that began on the ninth of March alongside the RFEF, Spain’s government, clubs and candidate cities. Findings from the trip could be decisive in endorsing Donostia and Anoeta’s case to be selected when the tournament takes place in four years.
Another evaluation is expected in October and a final decision is due at the start of 2027.
Anoeta will expand to 43,000 seats to meet FIFA rules. The bid, well regarded by the Spanish federation and FIFA despite pressure to favour Vigo or Valencia, will showcase the city’s record with the Tour de France, Top 14 rugby, the Women’s Champions League final and major concerts. Real Sociedad’s president has led a broad Gipuzkoa coalition, keeping the campaign united.
