FIFA launch disciplinary proceedings against Argentina over Falklands banner and assault in World Cup final | OneFootball

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Argentina following a series of incidents that took place during the World Cup.

According to the Daily Mail, the incidents include the display of a controversial Falklands banner after their semi-final victory over England and violent clashes that followed the final against Spain.

The governing body confirmed that it is investigating several alleged breaches of its disciplinary rules.

These include discriminatory chants and gestures, racist abuse, security and match protocol violations, supporters throwing objects, and the display of political messages by both players and fans during Argentina’s World Cup campaign.

The biggest point of controversy came after Argentina defeated England in the semi-finals.

Several players, including Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez and Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero, celebrated with a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”. 

The banner referred to Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands, sparking criticism in the United Kingdom, where politicians called for FIFA to investigate the incident.

FIFA regulations prohibit political messages at World Cup events, so the banner will be heavily scrutinised during the disciplinary case.

Separate disciplinary proceedings have also been launched against Argentina defender Nahuel Molina, midfielder Leandro Paredes and assistant coach Roberto Ayala over their alleged actions during chaotic scenes after the World Cup final against Spain.

Molina allegedly struck Spain captain Rodri during post-match celebrations, while Ayala is accused of punching Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo. 

Paredes has been charged with three counts of assault after allegedly grabbing Eric Garcia by the neck before forcing substitute Gavi to the ground with the assistance of Thiago Almada.

Molina is facing two assault-related charges, while Ayala has been charged with one. 

Paredes, Molina, Ayala, Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi have also been charged with unsporting behaviour over the confrontation that erupted immediately after the final whistle.

FIFA said the disciplinary action covers incidents from several Argentina matches throughout the tournament, not just the final.

They added that all those facing charges have been given the opportunity to respond before any verdict is reached.
