Fifa highlighted the historic connection between Corinthians and Corinthian-Casuals on Sunday, releasing a video in which Dominic Bliss, head of media and heritage at the English club, recounts the bond’s origins and British influence on Corinthians’ 1910 founding.
In the film, Bliss explains that predecessor club Corinthian FC toured Brazil in 1910, playing in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Their performances in the Paulista capital inspired locals to found Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, named in tribute.
The 1910 tour began in Rio, where Corinthian won 10-1 against Fluminense, 8-1 versus Rio XI and 5-2 against The Brazilians. They then moved to São Paulo and beat AA das Palmeiras 2-0, Paulistano 5-0 and SPAC 8-2.
Those São Paulo matches were watched closely by workers Joaquim Ambrósio, Carlos da Silva, Raphael Perrone and Anselmo Correia, along with contractor Antonio Pereira. Inspired by what they saw, the five founded Corinthians and chose the name as a direct homage.
The link intensified this year as Corinthians’ women visited London for Fifa’s Women’s Club World Cup. A group of players attended a Casuals fixture and, in return, supporters of the English club backed the Brabas from the stands.
Bliss described the visit as the first time a Corinthians side had been to their ground, almost a pilgrimage. He called it a huge honour, noting the women’s six Libertadores Femininas and about 30 million supporters, compared with Casuals’ typical 300 crowds.
The relationship is also chronicled in the 2021 book “Corinthian – A mais bela história do futebol mundial” by Tomás Rosolino and former Casuals player Chris Watney.
