FIFA is exploring a regulation that would oblige clubs to field at least one locally trained player aged under 20 or 21 in every match, a move designed to boost opportunities for young players and which could be introduced next year.

FIFA has confirmed that talks have taken place with representatives of the six continental confederations, and said the idea received broad backing.

The governing body is expected to continue consultations before formally taking any proposal to the FIFA Council next year.

A key point in the consultation will be the definition of a ‘homegrown’ player, an issue complicated by varying rules across leagues and associations.

The scope and exact age cut-off, under 20 or 21, remain under discussion.
