FIFA is set to distribute a record-breaking $355 million to clubs around the world as part of its expanded Club Benefits Programme (CBP) for the 2026 World Cup, Sky Sports reports.
The governing body made the announcement on Tuesday. The payout is an increase of nearly 70 percent compared to the $209m distributed after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
For the first time, clubs will receive compensation not only when their players take part in the finals but also when they are released for qualification matches.
The move is part of a memorandum of understanding signed in March 2023 between FIFA and the European Club Association (ECA).
The agreement is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two bodies and to create a fairer and more inclusive system for global club football.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino and ECA Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi were delighted with the new arrangement.
The CBP was first launched for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. It has been on a steady trajectory since then, with the 2022 edition distributing funds to 440 clubs across 51 FIFA member associations.
With qualifiers now included, the number of clubs set to benefit in 2026 is expected to rise significantly.
The 2026 World Cup will be the first to be hosted by three nations – the United States, Mexico and Canada. It will take place from June 11 to July 19 in 16 cities across all three countries.
