Filipe Luís’s sacking left Flamengo stunned, with the announcement landing at one in the morning after tensions that had built since December. According to Globo.com, players reacted immediately to the news.

The decision was taken by president Bap and relayed by director José Boto in a conversation lasting under a minute. Several players contacted the coach to offer support, including leaders such as Danilo. There was no dressing-room farewell.

Filipe may return to Ninho do Urubu once more to collect belongings and say goodbye. Tuesday had been scheduled as a day off, but the squad were told to report for an afternoon session.

The first rupture came during contract talks that dragged on for months before an agreement on 29 December. Filipe felt exposed by leaks, while the board wanted further financial concessions. The new deal lasted just over two months, and the termination clause still needs settling.

In December, Bap sounded out other coaches, including Leonardo Jardim, and was already exploring a replacement before Filipe signed through 2027. The Jardim option resurfaced in recent days and advanced before Flamengo contested the semi-final with Madureira.

Another clash concerned bringing the first team into the Carioca after the under-20s’ poor start, with Bap ordering senior players to face Vasco in the fourth game on 21 January, disrupting plans.

Early-season results proved the final straw, with the board expecting better given investment and squad continuity. Strong demands were made at the training ground and a change was signalled, with Bap never fully sold on Filipe after taking office, though the post-2024 Copa do Brasil title moment kept him on.

Relations with Boto also frayed, and his communication style drew complaints, including absence from a post-Madureira huddle. The CT mood had shifted, with some players uneasy about Filipe’s methods. In his last briefing, he spoke of trying to keep spirits up after defeats, accepting the pressure and expressing lasting affection for Flamengo and its fans.
