José Boto faces his biggest crisis at Flamengo, with his handling of Filipe Luís’s sacking deepening internal opposition among players and staff. Relations were already strained.
According to Globo.com, president Bap made the decision, which Boto executed in a sub-minute dressing-room conversation at the Maracanã after the coach’s press conference.
Players were also irked by his brief address at Tuesday afternoon training following the dismissal. In a talk of about two minutes, he gathered the squad and stressed their share of blame, shifting weight from the board.
In his view, some players focus on improving contracts without matching performances. The group disliked the message and left without replying.
Since arriving, Boto has not sought to be popular, and staff also criticise his work. He was hired in January 2025 to overhaul the football department.
He had often ceded calls to Filipe Luís and at times defended him to Bap. That changed in recent days as he distanced himself before the sacking.
The current strain exceeds that of July last year, when Bap vetoed a deal for attacker Mikey Johnston and a row involving Pedro flared. Discontent with Boto’s methods was already considerable, and his early credit at Ninho do Urubu has faded quickly.
